Lighting up the Mall: City Hopes to Light Up Water Street Mall

Alley Art Festival, Aurora

Water Street Mall during Alley Art Festival on the last Saturday in August. The pedestrian-friendly area between Galena and Downer might be lit up soon.

Aurora will seek two Kane County riverboat grants for work downtown.

One grant would be used to permanently light up Water Street Mall at night, and the other to fix a crumbling path in Millennium Plaza.

The idea to light up Water Street Mall came from a meeting of Aurora Downtown, the not-for-profit organization of downtown merchants. Gina Moga, the city’s special events manager, said the meeting was about holiday decorations for the 2016 season.

“We started talking about all the activity that goes on at the mall,” she told aldermen on the City Council’s Finance Committee Tuesday. “And not just events, but the amount of people at City Hall, especially in the winter, after dark.”
