Gallery H My work has vibrant color and bold organic shapes which draw the eye. The lyrical and vigorous still lives and landscapes reveal an intensely patterned world. The plant forms express human gestures and emotions (confrontational, aggressive, and sensuous) that are bursting and full of life. Although rooted in realism, my paintings go beyond reality and exist in another space. There are see-through spaces and areas into other dimensions and plant activities. My work is not tranquil. I do not work from the direct observation of nature or objects. My interpretation is filtered through multiple lenses. Growing up in inner city Chicago, I was introduced to nature during Sunday afternoon drives with my family to nearby forest preserves and parks. The lush yet controlled natural space promoted my interpretation of the natural world as both exuberant and inherently ordered. Other sources of inspiration are folk art forms, including the textile and manuscript arts of several cultural traditions. I am of Polish descent and while my paintings do reflect that tradition specifically, their strong colors, sharply defined forms and manipulation of spatial relationships echo widespread folk art practices. |
