Come to EcoWeek in Aurora, IL for daily events, free talks and tours the second week of June! EcoWeek is a grassroots initiative to raise awareness and enjoyment of local and regional solutions in action. Make new friends and connect with community leaders!

EcoWeek Events Include:

EcoWeek kicks off Saturday June 6th with the 103rd annual grand opening of the 103rd annual Aurora’s Farmers Market, followed by the 54th annual Midwest Canoe & Kayak Race on Sunday June 7th.  Eat healthy farm fresh food and then go play in the water; who could ask for a better weekend!

COMMUNITY GARDEN TOURS – Monday June 6th, 6 – 8 pm
Meet Aurora’s urban farmers and learn more about local community gardening projects.  ‘El Jardin’ at Claim St and Union Ave in the new McCarty Burlington Garden plot is freshly planted full of veggies. ‘Garden of Hope – Jardin L’Esperanza’ at 171 S Lasalle St is tended by Mission Possible with support from local faith communities. Members of Marie’s Community Garden Park at 835-837 N Highland Ave shares fresh produce with the Marie Wilkenson food pantry next door.

What is ‘The Roadmap to Energy Independence’?  Come to Aurora Green Drinks on Tuesday June 9th at BallyDoyle Irish Pub, 28 W New York St,  6:30 – 8:30 pm to learn more.

Guest speaker Michelle Knox is an Illinois Solar Energy Association (ISEA) board member, energy solutions advocate, educator, entrepreneur and green jobs generator in Springfield, IL.  Michelle’s inspiring stories and WindSolarUSA, Inc. case studies show how businesses, community leaders and residents can work together to build renewable energy systems right in our own neighborhoods.

Illinois Solar Energy Association (ISEA) ‘Solar Drinks’ is coming to EcoWeek!  Do you know there’s a solar thermal heating system on the roof of Aurora’s train station?  Tour the system with Joe Hopp, Aurora’s Superintendent of Maintenance Services and Lisa Albrecht, Renewable Energy Specialist with Solar Service, Inc. at 7 pm on Wednesday June 10th. Lisa helped design and install Aurora’s incredible solar powered system!

“When are ‘Green Jobs’ Coming?” is the hot topic for Aurora Downtown’s ‘Hump Day’ meetup at Two Brothers Roundhouse, 205 N Broadway, 5  – 8 pm.  ISEA Solar Drinks speaker Lisa Albrecht is the Policy Co-Chair of the Illinois Solar Energy Association.  ISEA has been a key force in working on the Clean Jobs Bill SB 1485/HB 2607 to create tens of thousands of new clean energy jobs for energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies in Illinois.  Come eat, drink, laugh and make new connections!

Enjoy a Rain Garden Bike Tour with Eric Shoeny, Charlie Zine and friends.  Meet at Aurora’s City Hall, 44 E Downer Place, 6:30 – 8 pm. How is dirty rain water in city streets cleaned before it flows into the Fox River?  Ask Aurora’s engineer and watershed expert Eric Shoeny, who helped design and install over 100 rain gardens on the east side of Aurora.  Charlie Zine is a local green projects advocate and Chairman of the Sustainable Aurora Advisory Board. Tune up your bike and join Eric and Charlie for a tour of downtown rain gardens, biofiltration basins and bioswales along the Fox River Bike Trail.

Did you ever wonder… “Where does all the ‘Poo’ Go? Come to the Fox Metro Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour and see for yourself!  Meet magical micro-organisms under microscopes.  Take a bus tour around the water treatment plant. Enjoy a free box lunch too! Tour space is limited to 30 people. RSVP to to reserve your spot at the Fox Metro Water Reclamation District, 682 IL-31, Oswego, IL, 11:30 am – 1 pm.

Join the Downtown Aurora Bike Club Saturday June 13th, 9:30 am at River Edge Cafe, 18 W Downer Place and Bike the Fox River Trail!  Stop for a healthy lunch with Daniel’s Raw Paleo, Ghandi the Juice Guru, Nate’z Dogz Hot Dogs, and Taco Grill Salsa Bar at the Aurora GreenFest Food Truck Hub!

Park your bike at the Aurora GreenFest Bike Corral, enjoy live music at the Kids EcoVillage and visit over 100+ Local Market exhibitors at Prisco Community Center!  Test drive a new Evelo Electric Bike, pet a chicken, and pick up a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) guide to help plan your local summer farm tours.  Then pat yourself on the back… you’ll have just had the very best week ever, right here in the Fox River Valley!
